Despite popular belief, Calgarians don’t eat Grade A Alberta Beef for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Some of us actually don’t eat any meat at all, so it’s great to know there are some incredible vegetarian dishes to try in restaurants and cafes scattered across the city.

Here are 10 vegetarian dishes to try in Calgary – whether you’re a meat-eater or not.

1. Salad and Veggie Patty from dirtbelly

All of the salads from dirtbelly are stellar, and most of them are vegetarian, but the charred carrot salad stands out as one of the best. Combine that with one of the eatery’s delicious veggie pattys and you have one hell of a lunch.

2. Falafel Quesadillas from The Coup

These falafel quesadillas from The Coup’s lunch menu are made with hummus, tahini, sundried tomato, goat feta, purple cabbage, carrot, house pickles, black olive, and banana peppers in a sprouted tortilla and served with tzatziki. This dish can also be made gluten free and vegan on request.

3. Fig Pizza from Earth Cravings

Voted the best gluten free pizza in Calgary, Earth Cravings knows how to make a stellar pie. This za has a gluten free vegetable-based crust with fig sauce topped with caramelized onions, mozzarella cheese, soft goat cheese, and fresh organic greens.

4. Buddha Burger from Cafe Koi

The Buddha Burger from Cafe Koi consists of a hand-crafted black bean, almond, and mushroom patty topped with beets, spinach, shaved gruyere, and onion marmalade served in a naan bread. You can get this burger on a gluten free bun upon request.

Veg-In YYC is all about pure vegan and vegetarian homemade cuisine, and this smashed samosa veggito is a must-try item off the menu. This is one of the cafe’s three vegetarian burritos, so you may find youself coming back to try them all.

6. Garden Burger or Smokie from Clive Burger

You can make your burger or smokie from Clive vegetarian by request, and you’ll still be able to finish your dish with all of the delicious toppings available like Clive Sauce, ketchup, jalapeno, sauerkraut, and a fried egg to name a few.

7. The Les and Peter from Raw Eatery & Market

The Les and Peter consists of a chilled, stuffed avocado with Thai quinoa, cranberries, and peas. Served with sourdough toast, this dish is perfect for fuelling your day. The vegetarian options at Raw are pretty incredible, so it’s worth making multiple trips.

One of the most popular dishes at UNA, the Mushroom Pizza is a perfect mixture of roasted cremini mushrooms, smoked mozzarella, grana padano cheese, fresh arugula, and truffle oil. Tip: if you’re not into sitting down, grab a slice of this pizza from UNA Takeaway located right next door.
