The 10 Best Things to See on Netflix Canada in March

Mar 7 2018, 12:13 am

There was so much to like about last month’s selection on Netflix, some of us are still trying to catch up. So, if you’re still working on shows like Altered Carbon or Seven Seconds, no worries, we’ll see you on the other side.

However, let’s spring forward into March and highlight some of the best that Netflix has to offer for your total couch locked enjoyment.

This month has some indie darlings worth checking out and a few popular Netflix Originals that are dropping new seasons.

The full account of what’s coming to Netflix is here, but I have ten recommendations you should add to your list.

Brigsby Bear

Release Date: March 1, 2018
Director: Dave McCary
Cast: Kyle Mooney, Mark Hamill, Jane Adams, Claire Danes, Greg Kinnear, Andy Samberg, Ryan Simpkins

One of the best films of 2017 was Brigsby Bear and unfortunately, not a lot of people saw it. The story centers around a television show called Brigsby Bear Adventures, a children’s TV show produced for an audience of one: James. When the show abruptly ends, James’s life changes forever, and he sets out to finish the story. This film is quirky, fun, and original with just the right amount of heart. I can’t recommend this odd film enough.

Steve Jobs

Release Date: March 1
Director: Danny Boyle
Cast:  Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Jeff Daniels, Sarah Snook, Michael Stuhlbarg, Katherine Waterston

Directed by Danny Boyle and brilliantly written by Aaron Sorkin, this 2015 biopic about Steve Jobs is unflinching and all-consuming. It’s broken into three parts and set backstage at three iconic product launches ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac. The dialogue is snappy, and the acting performances are fabulous. Take a bite out of this award-winning apple.

The Stanford Prison Experiment

Release Date: March 3rd
Director: Kyle Patrick Alvarez
Cast: Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller, Michael Angarano, Tye Sheridan, Johnny Simmons, Olivia Thirlby, Nelsan Ellis

Based on a true story, a Stanford Professor conducts a controversial psychological experiment in which college students role-play either prisoners or guards. Almost immediately the subjects go off the rails. This is one of those thinker films that raises as many questions as it answers. It has a lot to say about how we let roles define us as people. It’s a hard sit, but it’s anchored on some solid acting with a standout performance by Billy Crudup.

Jessica Jones (Season Two)

Release Date: March 8
Creator: Melissa Rosenberg
Cast: Krysten Ritter, Rachael Taylor, Carrie-Anne Moss, Eka Darville

It’s been a few years since season one of Marvel’s alcoholic, misanthropic private detective Jessica Jones walked onto our screens. Fans of the series had to wait for Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, Daredevil, and The Defenders to roll out before getting more of Jones’ angst. We’re hearing good things about the upcoming season two but be forewarned the pacing is slow and it takes a while to get into. It’s set to be released on International Women’s Day with every episode this season being directed by women.

Wind River

Release Date: March 9th
Director: Taylor Sheridan
Cast: Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Jon Bernthal, Kelsey Asbille, Gil Birmingham, Julia Jones, James Jordan, Norman Lehnert, Martin Sensmeier

One of the best films of 2017 is now on Netflix. Due to the Weinstein debacle, there are many people who didn’t get a chance to see this film, so I’m excited to include it in my recommendations. This is a murder mystery that takes place on a remote Native American Reservation. If you liked the films Sicario, Hell or High Water, you will enjoy the third film in Taylor Sheridan’s trilogy. I can’t recommend this film enough.

Ricky Gervais: Humanity

Release Date: March 13

Ricky Gervais returns to stand-up comedy and brings his snarky and cringe-worthy humor to a Netflix special. He talks about the idea of having children, religion, and a society that takes everything too seriously. Put your political correctness aside and have a few laughs.

Before the Flood

Release Date: March 15
Director: Fisher Stevens

Need a friendly reminder of what we are doing to our planet? Let the dreamy Leonardo DiCaprio preach about the dangers of climate change. The Oscar winner talks to some of the world’s leading scientists, activists, and world leaders about the possible solutions. I know, the truth hurts.

Game Over Man!

Release Date: March 23
Director: Kyle Newacheck
Cast:  Adam DeVine, Anders Holm, Jere Burns, Blake Anderson, and Marc Brandt.

Three friends are on the verge of getting their video game financed when their benefactor is taken hostage by terrorists. This Netflix original looks like a hilarious action film with a very fun cast, lead by the actoring team behind Workaholics. Probably worth a late-night viewing. This is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Santa Clarita Diet (Season 2)

Release Date: March 23
Creator: Victor Fresco
Cast: Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore

The first season was a hit, now this horror-comedy is about to get all bloody again in brand-new episodes. This Netflix series is all about your typical suburban family Joel and Sheila Hammond who both work as real-estate agents. Sheila just so happens to like eating human flesh. This is a funny show with a great cast and wild premise, so if you haven’t watched season one yet, now’s your time to do some serious binging.

A Series of Unfortunate Events (Season Two)

Release Date: March 30
Creators: Mark Hudis and Barry Sonnenfeld
Cast:  Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes, K. Todd Freeman, and Presley Smith

Based on the popular children’s book series of the same name, the second season has been adapted from books five through nine of the series. The story focuses on the Baudelaire children, who after their parents die, are placed in the care of their distant relative Count Olaf, an actor who is determined to claim the family fortune for himself. This weird, gothic comedy is fun for the whole family.
