The 10 best things to watch on Netflix Canada in July

Jul 6 2017, 12:31 am

Last month Netflix body slammed a binge-worthy new series in GLOW to our TV screens and also got sentimental with their new feature film Okja, but what it was missing was some big titles.

July looks to remedy that with some fantastic 2016 Academy Award-nominated films that will be coming to the streaming giant throughout the month.

Even if you have seen the likes of Hacksaw Ridge or Arrival, there is still some great original content coming down the pipe that star big names like Jason Bateman, Keanu Reeves, and Keegan-Michael Key.

Being outside might be what you’re looking forward to the most this July, but when you’re ready to chillax indoors, check out these 10 beauties that will be streaming on Netflix this month.

Below is our pick of this month’s best movies and TV shows on Netflix. Make sure to check out our complete list of what’s coming to Netflix this month and feel free to give us some of your recommendations.

Hacksaw Ridge

Release Date: July 1
Director: Mel Gibson
Cast: Teresa Palmer, Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn, Andrew Garfield, Luke Bracey, Hugo Weaving

This is based on a true WWII story about Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield) who became the first Conscientious Objector in American history to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his work as an unarmed army medic. Desmond somehow single-handedly evacuated 75 men from behind enemy lines without even carrying a gun. This film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won two for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Read our full review here.

Oasis: Supersonic

Release Date: July 1
Director: Mat Whitecross

If you’re a fan of the 90s Brit band Oasis, you definitely want to check out this rock doc about the group’s meteoric rise including the creativity and chaos that brother Noel and Liam Gallagher brought to it. It’s a documentary full of great music, wild debauchery, and epic feuding.

Castlevania

Release Date: July 7
Director: Sam Deats
Cast: Richard Armitage, James Callis, Graham McTavish

This Canadian-American animated series is an adaptation of the 1989 video game Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse by Konami, in which the vampire hunter Trevor Belmont goes on a quest to defeat the vampire Dracula.  Over the years the video game to movie adaption track record hasn’t been great, but an animated series might work. The creators of this show are already working on an Assassin’s Creed animated series for Netflix too.

Chasing Coral

Release Date: July 14
Director: Jeff Orlowski

Due to climate change and humans, the world’s coral reefs are dying!

Chasing Coral, the winner of this year’s Audience Award for documentary at Sundance, is about how coral reefs around the world are currently vanishing at an unprecedented rate. Divers, photographers, and scientists set out on an ocean adventure to discover why the reefs are disappearing and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world. This looks to be heartbreaking but something we need to be aware of and hopefully, it motivates us to take action.

Friends from College (Season One)

Release Date: July 14
Director: Nicholas Stoller
Cast: Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, Billy Eichner, Annie Parisse, Fred Savage, Nat Faxon

This looks like an interesting comedy about a group of old friends from Harvard who reconnect as they head into their 40s.

This series, directed and executive produced by Nicholas Stoller, examines complicated relationships, including former romantic entanglements. It’s one of those shows about old friends trying to live as adults but drawn to the nostalgia of the good old days. What really sparks my interest is the cast with the likes of Keegan-Michael Key and Fred Savage to name a few.

To the Bone

Release Date: July 14
Director: Marti Noxon
Cast:  Keanu Reeves, Lily Collins, Carrie Preston, Liana Liberato, Alanna Ubach, Kathryn Prescott, Lili Taylor, Brooke Smith

This is a Netflix original film that will most likely spark some controversy. To The Bone is about an unruly 20-year-old anorexic girl named Ellen who has spent her teen years in and out of recovery programs only to find herself several pounds lighter every time. With things looking bleak, her dysfunctional family agrees to send Ellen to an experimental group home for youths, which is led by a non-traditional doctor (Keanu Reeves) who has unusual rules. This looks to have a great cast and should get a lot of eyes.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Release Date: July 18
Director: Gareth Edwards
Cast: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Forest Whitaker, Genevieve O’Reilly

If you haven’t seen the newest film in the Star Wars Universe, where have you been? Now’s your chance to check out what was one of the best films of 2016.

Rogue One follows a group of rebels on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, the Galactic Empire’s superweapon. This is such a fun film that it deserves to be watched more than once. Read our full review here.

Ozark (Season One)

Release Date: July 21
Director: Jason Bateman
Cast: Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner, Sofia Hublitz, McKinley Belcher III

Before Jason Bateman returns for another season of Arrested Development on Netflix, he stars and directs a new Netflix dramatic series called Ozark. This dark story is about a financial planner named Marty Byrde (Bateman), who suddenly relocates from a Chicago suburb to a summer resort community in the Missouri Ozarks, and who must pay off a debt to a Mexican drug lord.

Toni Erdmann

Release Date: July 26
Director: Maren Ade
Cast:  Peter Simonischek, Sandra Hüller, Michael Wittenborn, Thomas Loibl, Trystan Pütter, Ingrid Bisu, Victoria Cocias, Vlad Ivanov

Finally, you will be able to watch one of the best movies of 2016 that was robbed of an Oscar for best Foreign Film. Apparently Hollywood is also looking to “Americanize” this great movie so now’s your chance to see the original before they cannibalize it.

The story is about a practical joking father who tries to reconnect with his hard working daughter by creating an outrageous alter ego and posing as her CEO’s life coach. This film is not only funny, but heart-wrenching at the same time. This is a must see.

Arrival

Release Date: July 28
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Cast: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Tzi Ma, Mark O’Brien, Russell Yuen, Matthew Willson

Another great film which will be available to watch on Netflix. This was shot in Montreal, Quebec and directed by one of the Canada’s greatest auteurs in Denis Villeneuve.

This is one of my all-time favorite science fiction films about 12 gigantic spaceships that touchdown in different locations around the world. As nations teeter on the verge of global war, a linguistics professor Louis Banks (Amy Adam) leads an elite team of investigators to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors in order to find out what their intentions are.
