A few prime Banff hiking spots now have restrictions in place thanks to Parks Canada.
Sunshine Meadows, Citadel Pass, and Healy Pass are all part of the new restrictions that require hikers to stick to official trails or designated roads only. All other off-trail hiking is now prohibited.
The map below outlines restricted areas:
Parks Canada says the move is an attempt to protect “sensitive habitat” areas and improve habitat security for the local grizzly bear population.
If violators are caught hiking in any off-trail areas, they’re subject to a maximum fine of $25,000.
The restrictions started on August 8 and will continue until further notice.
