The two young children that were found dead in an East Edmonton apartment last week were stabbed to death, according to autopsy results released to the public.

The Edmonton Medical Examiner confirms that the young girls, who were six-months-old and three-years-old, were murdered.

On December 6, the father of the youngest child, a 29-year-old man, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

He was also charged with one count each of assault causing bodily harm and breach of probation.

Police responded to the apartment on 79 Avenue and 71 Street on December 5 for a report of a woman being assaulted.  Inside the apartment they located a woman in distress suffering from serious injuries.

Several hours later a suspect was taken into custody after the Edmonton Police Service received a report of a man acting erratically who had broken into a garage.

Patrol officers then returned to the apartment and found the baby and toddler dead inside.

The mother of the two children remains in hospital and is recovering from wounds sustained during the alleged assault, according to the Edmonton Medical Examiner.
