Apple unveils iPhone XS Max, largest iPhone ever made (PHOTOS)

Sep 12 2018, 11:25 pm

Last year marked 10 years since the first generation iPhone was released – a move that changed the landscape of mobile phone technology.

And now, at Apple’s latest event today, September 12, CEO Tim Cook said that the company has reached a major milestone, as they are about to sell their two billionth iOS device.

Cook said that Apple was founded to make the computer more personal, and that they have taken that mission further than anyone could have imagined.

Wednesday’s event was all about two of Apple’s “most personal products and how we are going to take them further,” Cook said, to a cheering crowd.

But on to what you really came for – Apple’s new products.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max

Apple introduced their latest design by saying that the iPhone X is allegedly the #1 smartphone in the world. But now, they’re “taking it to the next level.”

According to Cook, this is “the most advanced iPhone we have ever created.”

The iPhone XS is entirely waterproof and liquid proof, with the most durable glass ever on a smartphone.

Philip Schiller introduced it as the “most beautiful phone” they have ever made, and it has the biggest iPhone display to date.

Photos on the new phone will have a 60% greater dynamic range than the iPhone X.

And to make it all more exciting, Apple also introduced the iPhone XS Max.

Besides the wide stereo sound on this new device, the larger screen may excite those looking for better display.

While the iPhone XS has a 5.8″ super retina display, the XS Max is 6.5″ super retina display.

Face ID is reportedly faster, and both iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will be available with up to 512 GB of storage.

The new phones will include a 12MP wide-angle camera, while the front camera is now a 7 MP.

The phones will have all-new sensors, and improved true tone flash.

Probably the most impressive change, you can adjust the depth of field of photos after they’ve been taken.

For those who use their phones all day, the new iPhones have the best battery life – and should last 30 minutes longer than the X. The XS Max will last up to one hour longer.

Both phones will have Duel SIM card capability – allowing you to have two phone numbers on one device.

Customers will be able to pre-order iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max beginning Friday, September 14, with availability beginning Friday, September 21. Both models will be available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB capacity models in space gray, silver and a new gold finish starting at $1379 (CAD) and $1,519 (CAD) respectively.

But wait… there’s another phone.

iPhone XR

The iPhone XR has more durable glass, with an LCD display and comes in different colours.

The phone has a new display called a liquid retina display, think a bigger display in a smaller design at 6.1″, and scrolls “super fast.”

The XR will need to be tapped to wake up, and has Face ID similar with the XS.

The XR is only a single lens camera system, but has a wide angle like those found on iPhone X.

As for the battery, the iPhone XR has up-to 90 minutes more battery life than the 8 Plus.

iPhone XR comes with iOS 12, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. iOS 12 changes the way iOS users see the world using augmented reality, helps people rediscover and share photos, and makes communications more expressive and fun with new Animoji and Memoji.

The new XR will come in 6 colours including white, black, blue, yellow, coral and (PRODUCT)RED, and 3 sizes: 64, 128, and 256 GB.

The iPhone XR will be available starting at $1029 CAD and customers will be able to pre-order iPhone XR beginning Friday, October 19 with availability beginning Friday, October 26.

Apple Watch Series 4

Apple Watch has become the #1 watch in the world, according to Cook, who said it has “redefined what a watch can do for you.”

The company introduced the Apple Series 4, a watch with a whole new design that includes a curved screen, runs two times faster than before, and has 30% larger screens… All in a “slimmer” design. It also includes an “all-day” battery life.

“Every detail has been thoughtfully considered, and it is beautiful,” said Jeff Williams, COO.

The new displays for the watch features more in maps and calendar, along with travel details – for example, it can now show your boarding pass details.

The speaker has also been redesigned and is 50% louder. The mic is now on the opposite side, to reduce echo and making phone calls clearer.

The new processor on the Apple Watch Series 4 can now detect when you fall down and can alert paramedics.

Apple’s Series 4 Watch now has three new heart rate features.

According to Apple, the Watch Series 4 enables customers to take an ECG reading right from the wrist using the new ECG app, which takes advantage of the electrodes built into the Digital Crown and new electrical heart rate sensor in the back crystal. With the app, users touch the Digital Crown and after 30 seconds, receive a heart rhythm classification.

It can classify if the heart is beating in a normal pattern or whether there are signs of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), a heart condition that could lead to major health complications.

With watchOS 5, Apple Watch intermittently analyzes heart rhythms in the background and sends a notification if an irregular heart rhythm suggestive of AFib is detected. It can also alert the user if the heart rate exceeds or falls below a specified threshold.

Fall detection utilizes a next-generation accelerometer and gyroscope, which measures up to 32 g-forces, along with custom algorithms to identify when hard falls occur.

By analyzing wrist trajectory and impact acceleration, Apple Watch now sends the user an alert after a fall, which can be dismissed or used to initiate a call to emergency services. If Apple Watch senses immobility for 60 seconds after the notification, it will automatically call emergency services and send a message along with location to emergency contacts.

Apple said that the watch is FDA Approval, but (plot twist) it is only available in the US this year.

It will be available on September 21 in 3 finishes: silver, gold, and stainless space grey.

Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS) starts at $519 (CAD) and Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular) starts at $649.
