We’ve joked around a lot about Americans moving to Canada if Trump their least favourite candidate wins the election.

But it’s hard not to crack wise when Walter White himself is saying he’ll come north if next Tuesday’s vote goes the wrong way, and Steven Colbert is already visiting Canadian immigration lawyers.

Many Americans, however, simply aren’t joking. Instead, they’re seriously upping their Canadian job hunt.

According to massive employment website Monster, the number of Americans searching for jobs in Canada has jumped some 58% in the past year. Between January and October of 2016, more than 30,000 job searches performed in the US used the keyword ‘Canada’, up from less than 20,000 searches in all of 2015.

While Monster admits that “correlation is not always causation,” they also note the timing sure is interesting.

But where are these Americans looking to land when they’re no longer state-side? Well, the most popular provincial searches have been:

  1. Ontario
  2. Alberta
  3. British Columbia
  4. Quebec
  5. New Brunswick

And among those provinces, naturally the largest cities in each were the most sought after, including Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver. The centre of the universe was the largest city-specific recipient of queries however, with a full 10% of the 30,000+ searches for Canadian jobs focused on Toronto.

If this starts to get you all worked up and worried about your own job safety, we suggest you relax, eh. According to Monster, Toronto has nearly 40,000 current job openings on their site, while Montreal adds another 25,000 openings.

The top fields being searched by Americans looking for employment in Canada have been as follows:

  1. Engineers (civil, mechanical, software, and/or chemical)
  2. IT (Java developers, network admin, net developers, web developers)
  3. Accountants (accountants, clerks, bankers)

Sales and HR positions were also highly searched by Americans.

However, it should be noted that Walmart has the most jobs available in Canada. So hey, maybe we won’t even have to welcome our southern cousins when they show up in droves on November 9, they could already be greeting us.
