The PEAK Performance Project is an annual program intended to launch the international music careers of some of Alberta and British Columbia’s best up-and-coming artists.
Now in its seventh year, the $4.9 million program puts the artists through a series of workshops that educate, promote, and cultivate their industry savvy while also building a sense of community amongst the musicians and the professionals. Some of the elements of the project include hosting a charity event and a music industry intensive crash course at PEAK Boot Camp.
The prizes for the Alberta edition of the project this year are a $100,953 first prize, $75,000 second prize, $50,000 third prize, and a $5,000 base camp award given to each of the Top 12 bands to contribute to their career development.
Last year, Edmonton’s The Wet Secrets took first place, Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk took second place, and 36? took third place. Past BC PEAK Performance Project winners include We Are the City, Kyprios, Current Swell, Dear Rouge, and Good for Grapes.
The Alberta PEAK Performance Project announced their Top 12 earlier this summer and the artists are beginning to prepare themselves for the next step (and one of the most important parts) of the project — a set of public performances titled the Performance Project Showcase Series.
The series will be held at the Nite Owl in Calgary on Fridays in October and will feature each of the finalists with three performances per night. Tickets are now available online, at Sloth Records in Calgary, through any of the bands, or at the door the night of.
