Air Canada is alerting its customers that they may be the victim of a data breach. Between August 22 and 24, the company detected unusual login behaviour within their mobile app.

The airline blocked the attempts and implemented additional security to protect their users against unauthorized login attempts, says the airline.

Air Canada has since locked all mobile app accounts to protect their customer’s data.

Of the approximately 1.7 million people use their mobile app, the investigation found that 20,000 profiles were improperly accessed. Potentially affected customers are being contacted directly.

App users are being asked to follow the email instructions in order to reactivate their Air Canada mobile account.

Canada’s largest airline says that credit card information is protected and recommends customers monitor their transactions for suspicious behaviour.

The airline says that Aeroplan passwords are not stored within the Air Canada app and that the reward points are safe as well as passport information.

The airline claims that customer’s data protection is of paramount importance and that their multi-layered security is working with leading industry experts to continuously improve practices and technology to avoid hacking procedures.
