Here are some of the top events to check out in Calgary this weekend from Friday, August 14 to Saturday, August 16.

Disney’s The Lion King Calgary 2015 at Southern Jubilee Auditorium

  • What: Travel to the African savannah to marvel at the jumping gazelles, swooping birds, majestic lions and more in the Broadway musical. Listen to the unforgettable songs, like “The Circle of Life”, and the incredible vocalists and musicians producing them.
  • Where: Southern Jubilee Auditorium- 1415, 14 Avenue NW Calgary

Alberta Handball Association 2015: World Championships

  • What: 2015 World Handball Championships to be held in Calgary with Canada and 26 other nations.

Taste of Calgary

  • What: One of Calgary’s most appetizing outdoor festivals is back for it’s 19th year at Eau Claire’s Festival Plaza. Exotic global cuisine such as Cajun, Caribbean, East Indian and Mediterranean will be present for you to experience and enjoy.
  • Where: Eau Claire, Calgary

Milky Way Nights

  • What: The public has an opportunity to observe the dark night sky with University of Calgary researchers, and these three nights will have close to a new moon for better viewing of a planetary nebula, globular clusters and distant galaxies. Check weather forecasts before you attend to ensure a good view.
  • Where: Rothney Astrophysical Observatory
  • When: Drop between now and Saturday, August 15 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Calgary Reggae Festaval

  • What: Music will be ringing everywhere for this years Reggae fest. There will also be a kids zone set up where they can play games, batter up, make crafts, have their face painted and play sports.

Opera in the Village

  • What: Performances from The Mikado and The Scorpions’ Sting: an Egyptian Myth will take place in a 900 seat open air tent. There will be free activities like movie nights, roving performers and more.

Inglewood Night Market

  • What: With over 60 vendors, 4 fantastic food trucks and live music it’s a must visit Market.

Calgary’s 5th annual Omatsuri (Japanese Festival)

  • What: The family-friendly event that showcases Japanese culture from the arts to food. Watch Ikebana flower arranging, Japanese song and dance presentations and martial arts demonstrations and more.

Calgary Spartan Race

  • What: This is a timed obstacle race that varies in length depending on what athletes want to sign up to do. You can also watch the races and enjoy the grounds for $10. With course lengths of 3+miles (Sprint), 8+miles, (Super) and 12+miles (Beast) each course is filled with mud, water, and signature obstacles. Athletes of all fitness levels can enjoy participating.
