Disney’s The Lion King Calgary 2015 at Southern Jubilee Auditorium

  • What: Travel to the African savanna to marvel at the jumping gazelles, swooping birds, majestic lions and more in the Broadway musical. Listen to the unforgettable songs, like “The Circle of Life”, and the incredible vocalists and musicians producing them.
  • Where: Southern Jubilee Auditorium- 1415, 14 Avenue NW Calgary
  • When: August 11 to September 6, Tuesday to Saturday 7:30 p.m. and Sunday 6:30 p.m.. Matinee Performances Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m..

Alberta Handball Association 2015: World Championships

  • What: 2015 World Handball Championships to be held in Calgary with Canada and 26 other nations.

Lacrosse: Founders’ Cup

  • What: Come watch 7 teams with 210 athletes competing for the founders’ cup in the the Canadian Jr. Lacrosse championship.
  • Where: Max Bell Centre- 1001 Barlow Trail SE, Calgary
  • When: Tuesday, August 18 to Sunday August 23

Drive-In Movies at Deerfoot Mall

  • What: Wednesday nights just got a little more fun thanks to the return of an old-school classic event, the Drive-In Movie series.
  • Where: Deerfoot Mall- 901 64 Ave NE, Calgary
  • When: Wednesday, August 19 at sunset
  • Cost: Free

Opera in the Village

  • What: Performances from The Mikado and The Scorpions’ Sting: an Egyptian Myth will take place in a 900-seat open air tent. There will be free activities like movie nights, roving performers and more.
  • Where: East Village, Calgary
  • When: Thursday, August 13 to Saturday, August 22
  • Cost: Varies

GlobalFest

  • What: This years 6th GlobalFest will be showcasing Calgary’s cultural diversity and artistic excellence.
  • Where: Elliston Park- corner of 17th Avenue and 60th Street SE
  • When: Thursday, August 20 to Saturday August 29
  • Cost: $7.50 and finale tickets are $15 plus GST

St.Patrick’s Island: Outdoor Movie Series

  • What: Watch movies on the Rise in their 9-metre high natural amphitheatre. You are welcome to bring blankets but don’t bring chairs as it is on a slope. This weeks movie is Where The Wild Things Are.
  • When: Thursday, August 20 from 9 to 10:45 p.m.
  • Where: St. Patrick’s Island
  • Cost: Free

STORYHIVE Music Video Screening

  • What: A group that is looking for creative talent in Alberta and BC to give production grants to allow competitors to make their video projects happen. The winner (one from Alberta and one from BC) will also receive $30,000 grant, training and mentorship opportunities, and distribution on TELUS Optik TV. The community gets to vote on which of the competing projects screens on TELUS Optik TV, online and everywhere. Must be 18 and over.

  • When: Thursday, August 20 2015 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Livingston Place Farmers Market

  • What: Local producers of meats, fruits, vegetables, preserves, desserts and more. There will also be live entertainment as well as food trucks during the noon hour.

Downtown Street Piano series

  • What: For four years Downtown Calgary has commissioned outdoor street pianos to encourage people to play and listen to music. There are now two pianos: the Woodlands piano located on 3rd street & 6th Avenue SW and the new one Wee Little piano, which features a book exchange, located on 8th ave & Centre Street SW. On this Tuesday, Warren Tse (Calgary Hitmen Oranist) is playing on the Wee Little Piano and on Thursday Chris Maric will be playing Reggae/pop on the Woodlands piano.
  • Where: Either piano location depending on the day
  • When: Every Tuesday and Thursday in August from Noon to 1 p.m.
